(Monday, March 26, Orlando, Fla.) – The Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra is partnering with multiple Parramore schools as part of its Notes in Your Neighborhood program, sponsored by OUC: The Reliable One.  Originally provided to elementary schools as an exciting and engaging program since 2011 to inspire students beginning to choose their instrument in middle school, the program has recently expanded to include middle and high schools.

Elementary students receive multiple after-school visits featuring principal musicians from the Orlando Philharmonic presenting information about their instruments, sharing insight into how they make a living in the arts, and offering small group and individual instruction to students as they take their first steps into instrumental music.  The culmination of the program is presented at the school for the student body to inspire future Notes in Your Neighborhood students.

This year, middle and high school students from Jones High School, Howard Middle School and the Academic Center for Excellence are receiving personalized coaching from the principal musicians of the orchestra. The program is important for retaining and recruiting students who may not have extensive experience performing in an ensemble.

“We are collaborating at these schools to help foster excellence and inspire students to make music a more active part of their lives,” says Dr. Leia Barrett, director of education for the Orlando Philharmonic.  “It is our hope that these partnerships will help Jones High School connect more deeply with its feeder middle schools, leading to stronger recruitment and retention and, therefore, stronger music programs.”

Additional funders include the City of Orlando Mayor’s Matching Grant Program, Publix Supermarket Charities and Seacoast Bank.
