Hundreds of tiny sea turtles find refuge at Brevard Zoo

MELBOURNE, Fla., October 10, 2018 — Brevard Zoo’s Sea Turtle Healing Center is caring for nearly 300 green and loggerhead sea turtle “washbacks” pushed ashore when Hurricane Leslie disrupted their habitat.

“When sea turtles hatch, they rely on energy stores from a yolk sac to make the multi-mile swim to offshore weed lines—floating masses of Sargassum seaweed that provide shelter and food,” explained sea turtle program manager Shanon Gann. “If the seaweed is disrupted by a storm or strong winds that wash them back to shore, the little turtles do not have the energy to make the long swim again.”

Healing Center staff and volunteers are caring for the washbacks for a few days until open ocean conditions improve; at that time, they will be transported offshore in a boat and placed in weed lines.
Sea Turtle Preservation Society (STPS) volunteers are transporting the turtles to the Healing Center. Individuals who find washbacks should immediately call STPS at 321-676-1701 or Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission at 1-888-404-3922 for rescue instructions.

Brevard Zoo is home to more than 900 animals representing 195 species from all over the world. As a not-for-profit organization, it is a leader in the fields of animal wellness, education and conservation. More information is available at www.brevardzoo.org.

Treetop Trek features five aerial obstacle courses that whisk guests above parts of the Zoo and through lush Florida landscapes. More information is available at www.treetoptrek.com.

Brevard Zoo building home for rescued bears

MELBOURNE, Fla., October 9, 2018 — Brevard Zoo is working diligently with Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission (FWC) to provide a permanent home for bears who cannot remain in their natural habitat due to unfortunate circumstances.
A 20-month-old, as-yet-unnamed Florida black bear arrived in August and will make her appearance to guests in early 2019. The bear has already formed bonds with keepers, who have been providing her with daily interactive enrichments. They report that she is very smart, curious and attentive. The Zoo’s veterinary and animal care staff conducted an overall wellness check and found her to be in good health.

Rededication of historic Old Jail Museum hosted by Historic Tours of America and Old Town Trolley Tours of St. Augustine, Sept. 26

Commemoration of 127-year-old correctional facility restoration and $5,000 donation to
St. Augustine Police Department and Benevolent Society

St. Augustine, Fla. – September 21, 2018 - The rededication and ribbon cutting at the St. AugustineOld Jail Museum will commemorate the 127-year-old correctional facility and a much-needed facelift culminating a yearlong restoration project funded by its owner and caretaker, Historic Tours of America, Inc.

According to Dave Chatterton, General Manager of Old Town Trolley Tours and Attractions of St. Augustine, the restoration work was more than just cosmetic as Hurricane Irma caused severe damage to the Old Jail Museum last year. Interior steel girders were collapsing, and the entire roof was starting to weaken as parts were torn off by the hurricane. After seeing cracks in the building’s foundation and thick cement walls, Historic Tours of America was quick to initiate a $1 million, major restoration project to save the national treasure. “The Old Jail Museum is back in order including newly recreated interiors of the Sheriff’s office, the jailer’s sleeping quarters, parlor, kitchen, and the prisoner’s cell blocks,” said Chatterton.

First sea turtle of her kind released by Brevard Zoo

MELBOURNE, Fla., September 24, 2018 — This afternoon, Guacamole became the first adult green sea turtle released by Brevard Zoo’s Sea Turtle Healing Center. A crowd of hundreds gathered to watch the 200-plus-pound reptile wade her way into the ocean.
This turtle’s massive size prohibited Healing Center staff and volunteers from carrying her to the beach, so Guacamole “hitched a ride” on a Brevard County Ocean Rescue UTV.
Guacamole was released at Lori Wilson Park in Cocoa Beach around 3 p.m. She was found stranded at the same beach back in February with old predator attack wounds.
Guacamole was missing most of her right front flipper and had several lacerations when admitted to the Healing Center. The Zoo’s experts treated her wounds with medication and honey, assisted with her eating and eliminated a parasitic infection before deeming Guacamole ready for release earlier this month.
Brevard Zoo is home to more than 900 animals representing 195 species from all over the world. As a not-for-profit organization, it is a leader in the fields of animal wellness, education and conservation. More information is available at www.brevardzoo.org.

A Tour of Florida From the 2018 Florida Governor's Conference on Tourism

Perhaps this won't qualify as our meatiest post ever, but it stands solid as a worthy snippet to use as a sort of announcement and "teaser" if you will.

Last week, we attended the 2018 Florida Governor's Conference on Tourism at the Omni Resort. Although we were only able to make it for one day of the three-day event, there was a remarkable amount of knowledge and connection to be made in that brief visit!

The Florida Governor's Conference on Tourism featured a fantastic array of speakers and educational tracks of great value to members of the hospitality and tourism industry - most notably, in marketing and customer outreach. We explored the changing profile of today's Florida traveler, the incoming generation of travelers, evolving trends, emerging businesses, and much more. Perhaps most importantly, we explored our beautiful state from a centralized gathering of like-minded people who all have a vested interest in continuing to perfect our travel game overall.

This was our first time attending the Governor's Conference, and we were so impressed and inspired by the knowledge we gained at the event that we decided to share some fun with you! For quite a while now, we've been expanding our reach to report news from other popular destinations, and lesser-known spots as well. From time to time, we even venture out for firsthand feature reports from locations "Beyond Orlando" (as we call this segment of coverage). Thanks to some handy new info we gathered at the Governor's Conference, we've selected a few of the locations that really caught our attention, and we're going to explore them a bit more. While this little mini-project is still in the planning stages, we do want to share the list of locations with you now.

DRUM ROLL, PLEASE..........

Stay tuned for more details on our developing "Tour of Florida" - which could certainly grow to include other locations in the future. If you happen to be located in or near one of our current featured spots, we would love to talk to you as an expert consultant as well. Email dawn@comeseeorlando.com with your location in the subject line, and let's chat today!
