Disney On Ice - Follow Your Heart

How do you make a Disney show irresistibly appealing to those of us who already live in Mickey Mouse's backyard? You put those characters on ice skates and make it a non-stop, best-of display of magic, music, and majesty! Disney On Ice is one of our favorite annual traditions, and we were honored to attend this year's performance as Feld Entertainment Blogger Ambassadors once again. Disney On Ice Presents Follow Your Heart debuted at Orlando's Amway Center on September 2, and the standard of performance was every bit as magical as we've come to expect.

Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resorts

Knock another Walt Disney World hotel off of the ol' bucket list! Our most recent stay was at the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort. While the Swan and Dolphin are not officially Disney resorts (they are owned and operated by Starwood), they are located on Walt Disney World property, and do include many of the same general perks and benefits.

Disney On Ice - 100 Years of Magic

As a mother, a former Girl Scout Troop Leader, and a lifelong Disney fan, I have always appreciated Disney On Ice. Over the years, I have seen quite a few versions of this awe-inspiring performance, and it's never failed to impress. Disney On Ice typically has multiple shows in varied themes traversing the nation simultaneously. On September 4, 100 Years of Magic premiered at Orlando's Amway Center, maintaining the tradition of mesmerizing magic on ice.

This month, Splitsville Orlando celebrates its second birthday. The "luxury lanes" first opened to the public on December 19, 2012 at Downtown Disney, raising the bar for modern-day bowling alleys. But you might be surprised at what you're missing if you haven't had dinner at Splitsville!

Conquering Everest at Disney's Animal Kingdom

Reprint from original publishing on November 26, 2014
GEDSC DIGITAL CAMERA
Expedition Everest celebrated its grand opening on April 7, 2006. Located in the Asia portion of Animal Kingdom, Everest is the tallest of Walt Disney World's "mountain" attractions - just under 200 ft tall at its peak. And that's just the start of the impressive stats behind this behemoth. Four brake zones, two lifts, two track switches, and an 80 ft drop round out the jaw-dropping aspects of Expedition Everest. Brilliantly themed, this epic coaster reaches speeds of 50 mph, in both forward and reverse motion. The winding steel track measures over 4,000 feet in length, providing three minutes of runaway thrills. Each "train" carries 34 passengers in six ride cars through the craggy slopes of a wild Himalayan expedition - if you can escape the clutches of the legendary Yeti, that is!

Saying Good-Bye to Off Kilter & Mo'Rockin - A Bad Day, Disney-Style

Walt Disney World has been on a much-discussed "killing spree" as of late, and it seems to be coming fast - and all at once. This has been a ridiculously hot topic in my house, with the entire family trying to speculate at Disney's justification for this abrupt succession of closures and dramatic revamps. After a busy week, the kids and I decided we had to spend this day (the day of the ax) saying good-bye. Today was the last day to experience Backlot Tour at Disney's Hollywood Studios and Mo'Rockin, Off-Kilter, and Drum and Fife Corps at Epcot.

Recently, we've been discussing the local transportation services (Lynx). The I-Drive Trolley runs just past our home, and we're laying out some plans to haunt the I-Drive area in the coming months. Feeling adventurous, we decided to take the Lynx bus to Disney. I looked up the route. We can walk to a stop for the #50, which runs directly to Disney property in 20 minutes. Why not? We could catch the 11:40 bus, and all would go smoothly. Neither of the kids wanted to get an early start or spend a full day-night at the parks. We were simply on a mission, and we could accomplish it! I looked up the schedules of the performances at Epcot, and all seemed do-able... except.... Walt Disney World's official site suddenly said that the final Drum and Fife performance would be on the 25th, not the 27th. Needless to say, this sudden change left me more than a little upset, but I have no time travel abilities, so I suppose I'll have to hang on to the last performance I saw - earlier this year...

Times They Are A-Changin' at Epcot

Maelstrom is defined as:

  • A powerful whirlpool in the sea or a river
  • A situation or state of confused movement or violent turmoil

Seems appropriate. "Maelstrom" is also an attraction at Walt Disney World's Epcot - at least until its final voyage on October 5. There is quite a storm (or turmoil) currently brewing around this Maelstrom. It's a situation that's becoming far too familiar - another attraction bites the dust.

Hardscrabble Times in a Hard-Ticket (Disney) World

I really do love Walt Disney World. Although there are times when I seem a bit negative on the topic, it really is the main reason I am willing to remain a resident of Florida. I spent four years living in Tennessee, and I found that living so far from WDW was much like rehabbing through a 12-step program! As much as I dream of returning home to Texas, that charismatic giant mouse has me hooked. Realistically, it's quite possible that I'm here for the long haul... and I suppose I can accept that... because I love Walt Disney World.

Epcot - World Showcase - Norway Pavilion

I'm just going to jump into this one bluntly. Norway Pavilion has been a thorn in my side all week. At first, I was cursing an emergence of writer's block. Then, I moved on to mentally flogging myself for getting so wrapped up in my latest distraction ("CSI: NY") that I ignored all sense of duty and responsibility. It is surprisingly challenging to focus on Vikings and trolls when you're scrambling to understand ballistics and DNA... but frankly, I don't think writer's block or CSI are to blame this time. After much contemplation, I think the problem is simple - Norway Pavilion is lacking.

Epcot - World Showcase - Mexico Pavilion

Mexico Pavilion at Epcot's World Showcase is one that is very near and dear to my heart. Not only did I grow up submerged up to my sombrero in Mexican culture (Texan transplant alert!), but Mexico is the only country I've personally experienced outside of the U.S. I don't know if it is a surge of youth memories or just the genuine nature of this area, but I feel so comfortable here. Overall, it's a warm, inviting, fun area to explore... and a good portion of it is indoors! If you've learned nothing else about me, you know I love to pitch those escape zones from the Florida heat!

Disney Kitchen - Cinnamon Glazed Pecans / Almonds

EatingWDW.com
I am a sucker for a sweet treat, and I'm quite partial to this Walt Disney World favorite in particular. At various locations around the parks, guests can partake in a handy little snack that is guaranteed to satisfy those who love to have something to pick on throughout the day - cinnamon glazed pecans or almonds! They come in a paper cone that easily folds over, to store in a pocket or bag for future sweet tooth pacification, and you can obtain these little beauties for less than $5!

Behind-the-Scenes Tours at the Walt Disney World Resort

**This article originally appeared on the Yahoo Voices content network on July 1, 2014. It has been republished here due to the shutdown of Voices and YCN.**

It's no secret that Walt Disney World is a place where magic happens, but a good deal of that magic takes place backstage, or behind-the-scenes of the theme parks. You may be familiar with the parks themselves, but have you ever wondered what goes on behind the curtain, so to speak? Many visitors to the Walt Disney World Resort are not even aware of the experiences available to them through a wide variety of backstage tours.

The Grand Floridian Resort and Spa combines Victorian elegance with Walt Disney charm. This lavish deluxe resort offers exceptional accommodations, fabulous recreation, and exquisite dining opportunities. In fact, The Grand Floridian is home to one of the more desirable dining locations on Walt Disney World property, 1900 Park Fare

Disney Kitchen: Coca-Cola Cake

It's not my norm to include recipes in my blog. Some might say it's not really my norm to cook or bake, but that isn't quite accurate. I actually spend a lot of time in my kitchen, creating... It's just usually too chaotic of a scene to even consider documentation or bragging. I thought this might be fun to include though - and it's not too much of a stretch for my blog. You see, the recipe I'm sharing here came from a cookbook I bought at Walt Disney World! Ha! See how I fit that in so seamlessly?! I'm a rare breed of clever, I tell ya!

Star Wars Weekends at Walt Disney World

**This article originally appeared on the Yahoo Voices content network on May 8, 2014. It has been republished here due to the shutdown of Voices and YCN.**

It's almost that time again. Time for wannabe Jedis to face off with Stormtroopers before riding on a roller coaster with Aerosmith, or watching a six foot tall stick bug dance down the street. This may sound unusual to some, but it's just another tradition here in Orlando! Star Wars Weekends at Walt Disney World's Hollywood Studios dates back to 1997, but officially became an annual event as of 2003. This may very well be the only time you'll see throngs of people combining both Jedi robes and Mickey ears into their wardrobe, and looking perfectly normal - even cool. This year's galactic celebration kicks off May 16, and runs every Friday through Sunday until June 15. There's something a bit different to each year's event, and if you know what to expect, it can be an out of this world experience!

DSB - A Tribute to Journey @ Epcot's 'Sounds Like Summer' Concert Series

We all know that the Journey hit, "Don't Stop Believin'" is the center of the karaoke universe. Truth be told, it's so good because it's usually so badly done. After all... who can sing like Steve Perry?? Okay, so I'm partial to that voice. Personally, I think he's got one of the finest set of pipes in rock music - ever. Yes, I love me some Steve Perry, and of course... I love Journey. Last week's visit to "Sounds Like Summer" was a bit disappointing for me. The venue is not the kindest, weather is a considerable factor (ever been to Orlando in the summer? Land of the afternoon storm!)... it really isn't easy to hit a home run in this scenario, is it? But every now and then, you have that perfect pitch - and out of the park it goes!

Epcot - World Showcase - Japan Pavilion

Of all the lands represented within Epcot's World Showcase, the Japan Pavilion would have to be the one I've visited the most. In fact, there was a span of time where my son's weekly allowance required a shopping run here for the latest in Pokemon gear. We learned quickly to make this a last stop at Epcot, because the kids always held out for Japan before calling it a day.

Hotel California - A Salute to the Eagles @ Epcot's 'Sounds Like Summer' Concert Series

The "Sounds Like Summer" concert series officially kicked off on June 8th. Running daily through July 26th, this musical celebration is an annual staple at Epcot. Sounds Like Summer is a series of concert performances that feature cover bands paying tribute to legendary greats. Some of the scheduled acts are event regulars - like this year's openers, Hotel California ("A Salute to the Eagles").
